Course objectives
This course aims to introduce students to a variety of limitations when discussing Asian cinema from the perspective of a Western scholar. We will read and analyse texts by Donald Richie, David Bordwell, Noel Butch, Shirley Ando, Mitsuhiro Yoshimoto and more. The students will—in a series of discussions, presentations, homework, and readings—explore concepts such as orientalist, Nihonjinron, essentialism, transnational or hybridity in the context of film studies.
Learning outcomes
Students will be able to understand different types of thinking about Japanese cinema or culture from the perspective of Western scholars. They will also gain the tools and terminological devices to define their own position.

  • There will be two introductory lectures and the rest of the course will consist of discussions and seminars regarding key texts.
