- Course objectives
- The course combines excursions to scholarly linguistic institutions and a series of lectures delivered by both Czech and foreign experts in corpus and computer processing of language and in related topics.
The aim is to enrich standard teaching of computer linguistics and linguistically orientated Czech studies with concrete examples of work in the sphere of primary as well as of applied linguistic research and to get students acquainted with possibilities of using their specialisation in practice.
The course is aimed especially at students of Czech with the focus on computer linguistics, but it is also open to all students of Czech as well as to students of other philological programmes. - Learning outcomes
- Having participated in the course, students will get an insight into a series of topics relating to computer linguistics as well as to Czech studies from the linguistic point of view currently dealt with within applied research and practice in IT companies operating in the region, in media, in editors’ offices etc.
Students are able to process relevant piece of news on a specialized lecture or excursion.
On the basis of knowledge of requirements for work in the sphere of application they will be able to choose an appropriate professional stay, part-time position and subsequently also a position after graduation. - Syllabus
- There will be excursions especially to the Institute of the Czech National Corpus (Charles University, Prague) and to other departments of Charles University focused on computational linguistics, to various sections of the Institute of the Czech Language (Czech Academy of Sciences) and to companies and institutions in which graduates from programmes focused on computational linguistics and on Czech studies can find positions.
- The series of lectures will primarily be focused on topics from the spheres of theory and practice of corpus and computational processing of language, on issues of computational translation, on analysis and synthesis of spoken language etc. Some of the lectures deal with topics from the sphere of “non-computational” linguistics from the field of Czech studies.
- The structure and topics of the course is modified and enriched each term, also by following students’ suggestions. The choice of excursions is partly repeated, following in a fixed way the scheme of spring and autumn terms (hence the distinction between parts I and II; completing part I is not a condition for registration of part II).
- Literature
- Literatura bude studentům zadávána aktuálně v relaci k tématům přednáškového cyklu a zaměření navštívených lingvistických pracovišť.
- Teaching methods
- The focus will be on active participation of students, with regard to their interest in the issues dealt with during the particular activities. Students will be encouraged to make scholarly preparations for lectures and excursions, to participate in discussions and to process the acquired knowledge as team members.
- Assessment methods
- To complete the course successfully, it is necessary to participate actively in four activities (among which there must be at least one lecture and one excursion) and to complete assignments relating to those activities.
- Language of instruction
