- Learning outcomes
- Having participated in the course, students will be able:
- to identify, explain and correct orthographical, morphological, syntactic and stylistic mistakes in texts;
- to carry out corrections in texts using correction marks;
- to solve more difficult cases of language mistakes that are not stated in elementary handbooks on codification;
- to explain and summarize tendencies of development and current problems of the present-day language norm. - Syllabus
- Do you think that it is important to write correct Czech? Do you feel the urge to correct other people’s texts? Would you like to have sound arguments to persuade people that it is important to follow rules of Czech orthography? Do you want to become a “bad corrector”? Then come! You will find out that almost in every text it is possible to find mistakes. And you will be able to find them.
- The course is focused on present-day problems and tendencies in language norm. The following topics will be dealt with: written vs. spoken language; specific features of written communication; changes in orthography, their history and character; present-day tendencies; orthographic rules for loan-words; capitalization; hyphenation; punctuation. The seminar will also contain analyses of various types of texts and elementary rules of editing present-day texts.
