Course objectives
This course is designed especially for students of Old Greek, to whom it provides practical possibility to work with self-contained Latin texts. Students will practice the previously acquired knowledge of basic Latin grammar. Based on selected samples of original Latin texts, the students will further develop their grammatical skills and most importantly their translating skills.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course should be able to:
- understand and translate easier Latin text;
- find relevant information realted to a concrete text.
Syllabus
  • An introduction to individual working with original Latin texts: reading and analyzing of selected Latin sources pertaining to the history of religion, cult and everyday life. Reading practice includes grammatical as well as cultural and historical commentary on the texts:
  • Reading and translating samples of Classical Latin (Caesar, Livy, Ovid).
  • Reading and translating samples of Late Latin (Tacitus).
  • Christian Latin (Bible).
  • Reading and translating samples of Medieval Latin (Isidor of Seville, Caesarius of Heisterbach).

Teaching methods
Reading, tranaslating and commenting on the texts. Homework. Short presentation of a chosen topic realted to the history, culture or religion for class discussion.
Assessment methods
Credits are awarded for active class attendance (75%) and conscientious preparation of translation assignments; preparation of a short presentation for class discussion. Course grade is determined by performance in a final written exam where students’ mastery of basic grammar and vocabulary is tested through a translation of a short self-contained Latin passage (dictionary allowed).
