- Course objectives
- The aim of the course is primarily to present the development of the political history of modern Turkey, including Turhish international relations. The subject represents a basic introduction to the history of Turkey in the 20th century. At the end of the course, the students should be able to explain and clarify key observations about the development and transformation of Turkish society in a comprehensive view of domestic and foreign political contexts. The development will follow changes both in the political and economic spheres, with an occasional overlap into cultural history.

- Syllabus
- 1. Introduction: organization of the course. A brief summary of the basic historical events from the arrival of the Ottoman Turks in the territory of present-day Turkey to 1839, or to the beginning of the Tanzimat reform period. 2. From the reform period of the Tanzimat to the outbreak of the First World War. 3. World War I, Turkish War of Independence. 4. The establishment of the Republic of Turkey. 5. President Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and the government of the Republican People's Party. 6. Turkey in the time of Ismet Inonün and Andan Menderes. 7. Period of fundamental political, cultural and social changes. 8. Crisis of democracy. 9. Turkey in the 80s-90s of the 20th century. 11. Turkey as a strategic point between the West and the East. 12. Turkey and the EU: selected topics. 13. Turkey today.
