Course objectives
The aim of the course is to provide students interested in translation activities with experience in working with translation software. The Phrase translation tool will be used in this course.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student will be able to:
- Assess the advantages and disadvantages of machine translation and CAT tools
- Describe the functioning of CAT tools, especially Phrase.
- Effectively work in the Phrase environment.
- Create and manage translation memories
- Create and manage glossaries
- Use Phrase cloud tools
- Establish and manage translation projects
- Export outputs and update and check them

  • 1. Introduction to basic concepts of translation software
  • 2. Overview of CAT tools, advantages and disadvantages
  • 3. Introduction to Phrase - introduction to the environment of the tool
  • 4. Creating projects in Phrase
  • 5. The translation process in Phrase
  • 6. Creation and management of translation memory
  • 7. Creating and managing glossaries
  • 8. Translation project
  • 9. Final task
  • 10. Bonus: creating subtitles for movies
Teaching methods
The seminar is focused on practical examples of working with software and independent fulfillment of partial tasks, either in school or in the form of homework.
Assessment methods
The student is obliged to complete partial tasks during the semester and prepare a final thesis.

Study Materials
The course is taught once in two years.
Teacher's information
We are using Phrase in our translation courses free of charge. Phrase is a complete translation platform that includes translation memory, integrated machine and human translation, terminology management, and a both online and desktop CAT tool.
