Course objectives
Latin for the Non-latinists IV follows the course Latin for the Non-latinists III, and this course aims to learn a few remaining phenomena of basic Latin grammar, but above all, to practice working with a coherent Latin text.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course the student will be able to:
- explain grammatical rules studied in the course;
- understand and translate original Latin text;
- find relevant information related to a given text.
Syllabus
  • Gerundium, gerundive and gerundive construction.
  • Irregular verbs, praeteritopraesentia, semideponentia.
  • Introduction to autonomous work with text.
  • Reading and analysis of selected Latin sources on history of religion, cult or everyday life of choice. Readings include grammatical analysis of the text and cultural and historical commentary.

Teaching methods
Planned learning activities and teaching methods consist of lectures, practice (translation and grammar exercises). Regular class attendance and preparatory homeworks are recommended.
Assessment methods
Course grade is determined by performance in a final written exam where students’ mastery of basic grammar and vocabulary is tested through a translation of a short self-contained Latin passage (dictionary allowed).
