- Course objectives
- This two session course is about to take us through the fascinating /r/evolutions of XVIII century European theatre and is going to show the students the metamorphosis of its essential parts. We will analyze the European theatre culture as an integral unity of people and time. We will watch the tremendous theatrical personalities of that time shape the stage. Our attention shall be focused on Gottsched, Ekhof, Neuber, Fielding, Garrick, Voltaire, Diderot, Lessing, Goldoni, Noverre and many others. Our work will also concentrate on certain key texts such as Paradoxe sur le Comédien by Diderot, Lessing's famous Hamburgischer Dramaturgie and Schiller's Die Schaubühne als eine moralische Anstalt betrachtet Special attention shall be paid to XVIII century stage design and costumes.
