Course objectives
Course provides an introduction into thought of Søren Kierkegaard (1813-1855) who is generally considered as the father of many important branches of the modern art and philosophy, including Existentialism, Deconstruction, Negative Theology and PsychoAnalysis. Main objectives can be summarized as follows: to understand Kierkegaard's categories and concepts for the existential analysis of art, especially of theatre and drama.

  • Kierkegaard and Aristotle's POETICS, concept of catharsis and dramatic plot [muthos]
  • Concepts of decision-making and free-choice [proairesis] in Nicomachean Ethics and in Either/Or
  • Kierkegaard's definition of the tragic in "The Ancient Tragic's Reflexion in the Modern"
  • Category of crisis [krinein] in "A Crisis and the Crisis in the Life of an Actress"
  • Don Juan and the category of seduction, aesthetic appreciation of Mozart's Don Giovanni in Either/Or, "A Passing Comment on one Peculiarity in Don Giovanni"
  • Kierkegaard in the modern aesthetics: his influence on Adorno, Heidegger, Levinas, Derrida and Post-Modernism
