- This term's course will combine aspects of fiction, theory and film, considering some aspects of 'women' from both male and female perspectives in the case of film and fiction and including work by Thomas Hardy, Vladimir Nabokov, Jeffrey Eugenides, Angela Carter, Sofia Coppola and Alfred Hitchcock. The theory element of the course will focus primarily on the development of feminist perspectives in the British and American traditions but also some aspects of French feminist theory. The aim of the course is to compare and explore aspects of male and female visions of the latter gender in written fiction and film and to relate them to aspects of feminist theory and philosophy.By the end of the course the student will have written an essay in which they display the extent of their ability to understand and analyse aspects of the fiction ,film, or theory discussed, or a combination of these elements.During the course students will be expected to display and develop their ability to make points in relation to the texts discussed and to support them with appropriate textual evidence.Students will be expected to develop the skill of identifying the possible gender implications of literary and other forms of writing and an awareness of a range of perspectives on issues relating to questions of gender.
