- Course objectives
- Medieval Latin is a historical, cultural and linguistic phenomenon that is a direct successor of Latin language and literature of Classical antiquity. At the end of the course, students should be able to explain this continuity and its means; to point out the main characteristics of Medieval Latin; to describe the forms of Medieval Latin prose and poetry; to evaluate the importance of the Bible in Medieval Latin literature; to employ information about primary sources and scholarly literature in their further studies.

- 1. Definition and chronology of Medieval Latin studies.
- 2. History of Medieval Latin studies.
- 3. Constitutive elements of Medieval Latin (Classical, Vulgar and Christian Latin).
- 4. Dictionaries and other basic tools for the study of Medieval Latin.
- 5. Status of Latin in the late Roman Empire.
- 6. Forms and genres of Medieval Latin prose.
- 7. Forms of Medieval Latin poetry (metrical, rhythmical and rhythm-metrical poetry).
- SEMINAR: Reading, translation and analysis of selected texts.
