- Course objectives
- At the end of this course the students should be able to be acquainted with: • the rediscovery of Ancient Egypt for Western Europe • the idea of the remote antiquity of Egypt already for the Greeks • the use of Pygmies and Blacks in Greek and Roman art • the Hellenistic history of art in Egypt • the modern debates on “new” Greek papyruses: the querelle on the case of the “Papyrus of Artemidorus” • the vogue of Egyptian subjects in Roman art: the ages of Augustus and Hadrian • the transfer of obelisks from Egypt to Rome, Augustan age to Late Antiquity

Egypt after the Pharaohs: Alexandria 4. The many lives of the “Papyrus of Artemidorus” 5. A river for a kingdom: the Nilotic mosaic from Palestrina 6. Isis: a goddess for everybody 7.
