Course objectives
An overview of the history of Slovak literature and literary scholarship in the first half of the 20th century. The course contains information about the period, the literary epochs (realism, modernism, inter-war period), trends (naturism, expressionism, naturalism, Catholic modern, surrealism), schools and authors, with an analysis of genres and specific works and also leads toward a knowledge of written forms of expression within the given issues. Main aims of the course are:
- to understand development of the Slovak literature of that period;
- to understand the most prominent representatives of the Slovak literature from the first half of the 20th century;
- to understand Slovak literature as an integrative part of the building the national consciousness;
- to become familiar with an essential amount of scientific literature and its methods;
- to work with the secondary literature creatively;
- to apply acquired knowledge and skills on the creation of own scientific texts.

  • 4. Relations of Slovak and Czech literature, Slovak literary tradition in Prague

  • 6. Influence of European artistic tendencies on Slovak literature and their modifications
  • 7. Literary scholarship in the first half of the 20th century
  • 8. Literary scholarship and the inter-war literature
  • 9. The most stimulative tendencies and groups of authors in single genres
  • 10. Press, magazines, publishing houses and institutions

Teaching methods
Lectures combined with seminars, analysis of literary texts, reading of recommended literature.
Assessment methods
Active participation, testing of knowledge during semester, reading of compulsory literature, semester paper on the chosen theme. Assessment: oral exam.
