- Course objectives
- At the end of the course students should be able to: - understand and explain the religious diversity of the Lithuanian and Polish cultures; - understand and explain multi-lingual character of the Lithuanian and Polish literature - characterize main historical periods of Lithuanian and Polish literatures (reformation, renaissance, baroque, romanticism)
- Syllabus
- This course offers a comparative cultural history of Lithuania and Poland and emphasizes the multilingual and multi-ethnical nature of the Lithuanian - Polish Commonwealth (from the beginnings of the 18th ct to the rise of the national states of Lithuania and Poland at the beginning of the 20th ct. 1. Introduction: chronological and methodological definitions of the object in question.
- 2. Lithuania and Poland in the 16th ct.: reformation and contra-reformation.
- 3. Baroque in Lithuania and Poland; Jesuits in Lithuania and Poland; baroque literature in Lithuania and Poland
- 4. Enlightenment: the "sarmatian"-night and sc. “enlighten” reforms; political crises of the Republic.
- 5. The polish literary romanticism.
- 6. The positivist literature in Poland and Lithuania.
- 7. Shaping modern Lithuanian identity: S. Daukantas; M. Valančius.
- 8. Development of modern Lithuanian identity.
- 9. The "Young Poland" and the Polish culture at the beginning of the 20th ct.
