Course objectives
The aim of the lecture is to indroduce essential topics of the theory of narration, its development and contemporary trends in the worldly and domestic contaxts to the students. Particular topics are viewed on the background of various methodological approaches and strategies: stracturalism (R. Barthes, G. Genette, F. Vodička), generative theory (W. Schmid), cognitive science (D. Herman, M. Turner, J. Bruner), intermedial thinking (A. Jedličková, W. Wolf, M. A. Caws), hermeneutics (P. Ricoeur), theory of fictional worlds (T. Pavel, M.-L. Ryan, L. Doležel) and conceptions of H. P. Abbot, M. Jahn, M. Fludernik, J. Phelan etc. The lectures will be delivered by leading experts in the field of narratology. After having finished the course the students will be able to:
- understand essential problems of narratology;
- view basic developmental connections in the history of narratology;
- apply the gained knowledge to interpretation of literary artworks.
