Course objectives
The course places lexicology into other linguistic disciplines and also pays its attention to the connections with the logic, philosophy and cognitive psychology. Students will be acquainted with traditions and modern methods of research in this field of science. The course focuses especially on lexical semantics. Lexical onomasiology is studied only marginally (in compatibility to the special course focusing on word formation). Part of the course is devoted to the traditions and the present of Czech lexicography. The aim is to provide the basic outline of Czech and foreign lexicology, teach them how to research this field using different approaches and theories. During the course a wide spectrum of Czech dictionaries will be introduced and its efficient use in practice. Lastly the course helps foreigners to develop their language competency.
Syllabus
  • 1. Lexicology, its classification, its position among other branches of linguistics, interdisciplinary in the approach to researching lexicon.
  • 2. Lexical unit and its delimitation.
  • 3. Basic methodological approaches to researching lexicon: onomasiology and semasiology.
  • 4. Several theories of the language signification (philosophy of language, linguistics).
  • 5. Problems of internal structure and possibilities of describing language signification, significant generality.
  • 6. Chosen subjects of cognitive linguistics (metaphor in thinking and language etc.).
  • 7. Paradigmatic semantic relations (synonymy, antonymy, hyperonymy- hyponymy).
  • 8. Syntagmatic semantic relations.
  • 9. Polysemy.
  • 10. Lexicography, summary of Czech lexicography development, overview of Czech dictionaries, possibilities of its use.

Teaching methods
The course consists of seminars during which students learn to carry out a lexical analysis of texts, to use secondary sources of information and to work with various kinds of dictionaries of Czech. A part of their seminar assignment relates to theory and practice of lexicographical work (creating excerpts, macro- and microstructure of dictionaries etc.).
Assessment methods
The course is finished with the exam, it combines two parts: written and oral. Exam requirements: overmastering problems mentioned during the lectures, knowledge of the basic terminology and literature.
