Course objectives
The student will get to know the main features of development of burial rite in the culture of the ancient Middle East. The course will present the development of funeral rites and traditions in the historical perspective.
Syllabus
  • 1. Definition of terminology and topics, history of the research and overview of archaeological and anthropological theories 2. Specific of death perception and after death visions in the area – funerals as the source of knowledge of social structure 3. Beginnings of burial rites 4. Development and transformations burial traditions in the ancient Near East and the most important necropolises: Ur, Mari, Kishi, Uruk and Assuru 5. Influences of burial traditions in the marginal areas
