Course objectives
At the end of the course the students will be able:
to connect the knowledge of the Russian literature of the 18th century with the development in 19th century
to be acquainted with the main literary streams in Russian literature up to 1840-ies
to explain the main thematic and formal specifics of the Russian sentimentalism
to understand the reasons and the characteristics of the origin of romanticism as a literary stream
to understand the transition from romanticism to critical realism
Syllabus
  • The basic scheme of the course:
  • 1. the main periods, transition from sentimentalism to romanticism in Russian literature at the end of the 18th century
  • 2. the influence of war against Napoleon and of the Decembrists Insurrection on the climate in the society
  • 3. romanticism in the Russian literature – origin, specifics, connection with the European romanticism
  • 4. the Decembrists as authors and their works – philosophy and prose
  • 5. the Decembrists as authors and their works – poetry and drama
  • 6. the so called Pushkin circle – authors, specifics of their works, role in the development of the Russian thought and literature
  • 7. the main authors of Russian romanticism and specific character of their works
  • 8. A. S. Pushkin - his life and work
  • 9. M. Ju. Lermontov - his life and work
  • 10. the origins of the Russian literary criticism and its main representatives 11. the transition from romanticism towards critical realism
  • 12. the Natural School – its themes, genres, meaning and main authors 13. N. V. Gogol – life and work
