Course objectives
This course provides theoretical and practical information regarding current processes for building dictionaries and lexical databases. The topic is covered from the point of view of a linguist/lexicographer preparing dictionary entry with the use of computational language materials (building the word list, selecting lexical unit, definition of the headword, gramatical information, word usage in natural context based on corpus evidence, processing context with Word Sketch Engine). Technical issues of dictionary building are also covered (designing the edit form, converting data to XML, browsing and editing tools). In the project, students will build their own dictionary entries using the described tools, data and processes.
