Course objectives
The aim of the course is to provide students with an overview of basic research and application areas of health psychology and mental hygiene and broaden the knowledge base about the context and consequences of mental stress and prevention of physical illness and mental disorders. The content of the course is based on a holistic, bio-psycho-social conception of human existence in health and disease. At the end of this course the student will be able to understand the effect of stressors on mental and physical health and to clarify the possibilities and ways of coping with stress. Students will also be able to use the information to formulate practical recommendations on maintaining mental balance, health and prevention of burnout.
Syllabus
  • 1. Introduction to Health Psychology and Mental Hygiene. History and core topics, basic terms, leading representatives, professional societies and academic journals related to the fields. 2. Development of concepts and definitions of health and wellbeing. Bio-psycho-socio-environmental approach to health, global health concepts. Mental health, quality of life, adjustment, stress. 3. Risk and protective factors affecting the relationship between health and disease. Vulnerability and resilience. Key concepts of psychological resilience. 4. Stress. Stressors and salutors. Coping strategies. 5. Self-knowledge and self-control. Methods of self-knowledge. 6. Coping with negative emotions, importance and effects of positive emotions. Mind control - irrational thinking, positive thinking. 7. Self-regulation of behavior. Bad habits, their identification and elimination. Health-related behaviour. 8. Coping with time pressure. Procrastination, time management. 9. The relationship of mind and body. Psychosomatics and mental health. 10. Relaxation methods, imagination, suggestion and autosuggestion 11. Burn-out syndrom - prevention and intervention. 12. Spirituality, values and ethics.
