- Course objectives
- Propaedeutic course, conceived as overview interpretation of basic philological terms, methods and theories appearing mainly from pieces of knowledge of general linguistics. The learners will learn to view language as a subject of scientific research, to comprehend language as a structured system and realize the universality of relations between language and social phenomena in the widest meaning. They will be equipped with philological definitions and will get to know the basics of the problematic of every single philological discipline which they will come across during their studies.
- Syllabus
- 1. Linguistics as a scientific discipline. The subject of linguistics. Structure of linguistics. Basic philological approaches and methods. The relation of linguistics to other scientific disciplines.
- 2. Language as a social phenomenon. Theory of the nature and substance of language. Theory of the origin of language. Factors of lingual development. Basic language functions.
- 3. The relation of language and thinking. Biological pre-requisitions for creation of language.
- 4. Language as a character system. The aspects of a lingual character.
- 5. Systematical character of language. Basic lingual units and their relations.
- 6. Phonetic system of language. Phonetics and phonology. Prosodic language system, accentology, types of accent.
- 7. Morphological language system. Basic terms and categories. Types of morphemes and their variants. Basic word formative means.
- 8. Lexical language system. Lexicology. The word as a central lingual unit. Types of lexical relations. Lexicography, vocabulary types.
- 9. Syntactical language system. Sentence and collocations. Types of syntactical relations. Actual statement articulation.
- 10. Graphics. Orthographical principles, transcription and transliteration.
- 11. Stylistics
- 12. Typological classification of languages.
- 13. The history of linguistics, basic philological styles and approaches.
