- Course objectives
- At the end of this course, students :
- will be able to understand the specifics of the development of the Eastern Europe in the Middle Ages
- will be competent to demonstrate the basic causes of the differences in the development between the Eastern and the Western Europe
- will be able to justify the role of the Byzantine empire and the nomads in the history of the Eastern Europe
- will be competent to explain the role and the importance of the Orthodox Church in the history of the Eastern Europe
- will be able to define the circumstances of the rise of the despotic regimes
- will be comptetent to compare the specifics in the development of the Polish-Lithuanian union and the Moscow state. - Syllabus
- The Byzantine Empire and the main problems of its history
- 2. The ethnogenesis of the Slavs
- 3. State formation of southern and eastern Slavs
- 4. The socio-cultural role and significance of the Orthodox Church
- 5. The Christianisation of southern and eastern Slavs
- 6. The Baltics in the Middle Ages
- 7. The Turko-Tatar nomads and the consequences of their invasion
- 8. The origin of national states. Poland, Lithuania, Duchy of Moscow in the 14th and 15th centuries
- 9. The Kiev metropolis and all of Russia and their roles in the 14th and 15th centuries
- 10. The Polish-Lithuanian Union and the consequences of its foundation
- 11. Church union as a means of ordering religious relationships in Eastern Europe in the 14th and 15th centuries
- 12. The Muscovite (Russian) ruler as the Orthodox Tsar.
