Cíle předmětu
Film is not just a visual, but an AUDIO-visual Media. Sound and Music are not always subordinated under the narration, and they are not "unheard". Music plays a significant role in the meaning making process of film and television as well as in its emotional effect in its audience. Film music research focuses on questions of meaning, affect and functions of music in films. As a relatively young (sub)discipline it combines film studies and musicology. Important research in this field has been conducted within the last decades. The course is focusing on the functions of music in film, its approach is rooted in film studies with significant knowledge in musicology and music history. (But no musicological analyses will be demanded or delivered) The course will give an overview about the history and theory of film music and wants to motivate students to analyse case studies of musical moments in films on their own. The main theoretical and methodological tools will be taught.
