Course objectives
At the end of this course, students will be able to interpret the intertextual links between the pretext, i.e. Bruno Schulz's short stories, and the post-texts, i.e. selected parts of the world (not only) Jewish authors, available in Czech or Polish (Debora Vogel, Paweł Huelle, Danilo Kiš, David Grossman, Amir Gutfreund, Phillip Roth, Cynthia Ozick).
Learning outcomes
At the end of this course students will be able to:
- define the concept of intertextuality, know the basic theory of intertextuality, explain the terms pretext, intertext and posttext;
- to find and interpret intertextual allusions to Schulz's work in the works of selected authors of world literature;
- to interpret individual intertextual themes, as they evolved in selected Schulz post-texts:
1. Jungian character archetypes: archetype of the genius child, Kore / virgin archetype, hero archetype, archetype of the wise old man;
2. Shlemihls;
3. Myth of seeking a lost father;
4. Metamorphoses;
5. Is the book only a myth?;
6. The Kabbalistic (Lurian) concept of creation, decline, and reconstruction of the world;
7. Bruno Schulz as a literary figure.
