Course objectives
The aim of this course is to introduce the key points in the history of world novel from the end of the 19th century to present. The first session will deal with basic concepts related to the novel and the transformations of its form (the destruction of traditional epics) in the 20th century with regard to modernism and postmodernism. In the following sessions selected individual novels will be analysed: their type, structure (narrative strategies, characters, time, reflexivity, etc.) and broader issues (authority, ethics, etc.). In every session the lecturer will also present the literary-historical context of the given novel.
Learning outcomes
After the course, students will be able to:
be familiar with the history of world novel from the end of the 19th century until present;
explain basic features and concepts of modernism;
explain basic features and concepts of postmodernism;
analyse novels taking into account their literary-historical and social context.
