- Course objectives
- The doctoral exam tests the students' knowledge of important linguistic theories and approaches.
- Learning outcomes
- Successful candidates will demonstrate the knowledge of important linguistic theories and approaches.

- - Current research in functional syntax, semantics, sociolinguistics, and pragmatics. - Synchronic and diachronic approach to the English language. - The development of linguistic thought and the position of the Prague School of Linguistics among the linguistic approaches of the 20th century.

- Teaching methods
- Oral exam, for which the candidate has to study sources from the following areas: - Current research in functional syntax, semantics, sociolinguistics, and pragmatics. - Synchronic and diachronic approach to the English language. - The development of linguistic thought and the position of the Prague School of Linguistics among the linguistic approaches of the 20th century. The candidates have to demonstrate their knowledge of these thematic areas, as wel as the capability to formulate their own view of the phenomena studies within these areas.
- Assessment methods
- The studets are assessed according to their performance by a committee of at least three examiners.

- The course can also be completed outside the examination period.
The course is taught annually.
