Course objectives
This course focuses on Swedish-Danish fight for hegemony in the Baltic Sea, on Sweden’s and Denmark’s engagement in European politics, on Sweden’s and Russia’s rivalry to become the word power and on the birth of Finnish nation and Finnish national state in conditions of that rivalry.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course students should be able to understand and explain historical power circumstances and their changing in the Baltic Region after the break-up of the Kalmar Union.

  • I. 1523–1648: Beginnings of the Vasa-dynasty, Gustav the Ist. – Reformation in Sweden – Wars with Russia and Poland – The Swedish-Finnish empire as a great power of Europe.
  • II. 1648–1770: Sweden wins the battle of the mare Balticum – The Great Northern War and the defeat of the Charles the XIIth. – Petrograd founded
  • III. 1770–1835: Reforms of the Enlightenment-time – Sweden and Finland in the Napoleons Europe - Finland under Alexander I. – The capital city moved to Helsinki
  • IV. 1835–1890: The Finnish national revival – The publication of Kalevala – Social reforms of Oscar I in Sweden – Reforms of Alexandra II in Finland – J.V.
