- Course objectives
- Lecture series is concerned with 19th and 20th century history of Poland and the Polish nation. The course aims to familiarize students with the basic data, while presenting especially the Polish history within the context of world and European historical events. We will deal with the following issues: key moments in the 19th century Polish history such as distinctive status of Poles in various occupied areas and their fight for the national emancipation, regarding 20th century events they are the re-establishment of the Polish state, status of the second Rzeczpospolita in the interwar Europe, Poland's participation in the Second World War and finally Poland as a part of the Soviet block until 1989 together with a role of the anticommunist movement and its significance within the Soviet block.
- Learning outcomes
- The graduate of the lecture cycle will have acquired a basic synopsis of the modern and most recent Polish history in the wider historical context. They should be able to orient themselves in the most important milestones of Polish modern and most recent history in the context of the history of Central Europe and able to perceive the difference of the historical development in comparison with the other countries of Central-Eastern Europe.

- 5) The Polish areas under the Austrian control
- 6) The fight of Poles for the renewing of the Polish state during the First World War
- 7) The restitution of Poland, fights for its frontiers
- 8) Internal and economic development of the Polish Republic in the interwar period, Marshall J. Piłsudski’s coup-d’état, the sanation regime, the Polish foreign policy
- 9) The Second World War, participation of Poles in fights of the Second World War, Katyn, the Polish-Soviet relations
- 10) Establishing of the communist regime in Poland 1944-1947 – destruction of the democratical opposition, fight with the underground
- 11) Poland during the period of Władysław Gomułka, events of March 1968 and December 1970
- 12) Failure of the Edward Gierek’s economic policy, growing of dissatisfaction, establishing of the independent labour union “Solidarity”, the way towards free elections in June 1989
