- Course objectives
- The aim of the practically orientated proseminar is to prepare students for studying (Czech) language, to provide them with the capability of elementary analytic work with the language material, with the knowledge of terminology of the discipline and with an orientation in elementary linguistic compendia and handbooks. The main focus is on the issues of grammar. An effort to get the input knowledge of students coming from various types of schools on the same level will be another aim of the course.
- Learning outcomes
- Having participated in the course, students will be able:
- to know Czech and international terminology of the discipline, to get orientated in compendia and handbooks relating to the discipline;
- are able to carry out complex language analyses (as presented at secondary schools) of a good quality;
- are able to cope with an analysis of elementary grammatical difficulties and are able to find them in the language of everyday practical communication;
- are ready to study (Czech) language dealing with the individual specialized disciplines. - Syllabus
- 1. A survey of compendia and of practical as well as popularizing handbooks relating to the discipline.
- 2. Elementary knowledge of terminology relating to the discipline, with the focus on understanding more complex items.
- 3. The system of Czech with the focus on grammar, i.e. on morphological and syntactic levels.
- 4. Complex language analyses.
- 5. Elementary acquaintance with the typological characterization of Czech (according to V. Skalička).

- Teaching methods
- Brief introductory explanations of the teacher or of the students who prepared their presentations, discussion, language analyses, individual and collective analyses of interesting/problematic language phenomena from the language of everyday practical communication – assigned or found by students. Checking the knowledge of phenomena dealt with.
- Assessment methods
- The final written credit test focused on a complex language analysis and on terminology of the discipline. A prerequisite for participation in the test is attendance of classes (with the tolerance of no more than two absences), completing small assigned tasks and successful continuous testing relating to the acquired knowledge of the issues dealt with.
