Course objectives
The seminar focuses on preparing students for proper asking and answering research questions both while preparing a research project and within certain paradigms of film science research.
For these purposes, the students will be provided with proper methodological tools. They will test the usefulness of the tools in the process of a "test research".
Objectives of the course is to provide differentiation and specialization of teaching, practice of formulation and implementation of research projects, improvement and extension of students’ competences, preparation for implementation of stylistically, heuristically and analytically satisfactory graduate work.
Learning outcomes
After finishing this course, students will have been able to:
- consider the methodological complexity and specificity of research topics from various areas of film history,
- be familiar with basic theoretical and methodological literature to the presented research areas,
- prepare a research project on the cultural, aesthetic and economic history of cinema.
Syllabus
  • Students will be acquainted with the broader portfolio of research approaches: cultural history of cinema, economic history of cinema, history of film style and history of film reception. There are three course blocks.
  • These areas of research will be gradually introduced by teachers (Radomír D. Kokeš, Pavel Skopal, Michal Večeřa), who focus on economic, cultural and esthetic history. The course will be carried out in three phases in the framework of individual research approaches: (a) methodical preparation, (b) realization of "trial" research according to specified parameters corresponding to model research, i.e. already published research, (c) comparison of the “trial” research results with the model research results.
  • This will increase the ability of students to formulate and work efficiently to solve the research problem, extend their methodological competence and help standardize the level of academic writing when formulating research intentions and outputs.
  • Contact lectures will be devoted to the introduction to the topic and selected topics that are not supported by the obligatory and recommended literature.

Teaching methods
1) Lecture: theoretical preparation in the form of methodological preparation
2) Home study of prescribed literature
3) Seminar: discussion of the literature, assignement of a trial research realized with the help of methodological tools and in accordance with required parameters
4) Home preparation and submission of the assigned project
5) Seminar: comparison of the “trial” research results with the model research results

Seminar work will be carried out within a limited number of seminar groups, which strengthens the didactic effect, as it allows the teacher to focus on the specific problems faced by individual students. Contact lectures will be devoted to the introduction to the topic and selected topics that are not supported by the obligatory and recommended literature.
Assessment methods
The final evaluation will be based on the total sum of the points awarded by the lecturers of each course on the basis of various parameters:
(a) work with given literature,
(b) ability to think critically about the subject in class,
(c) writing a trial project research,
(d) the ability to critically evaluate their own work in comparison with a model research.
