- Course objectives
- There are three aims to this course. Firstly, the course strives to create a shared platform for discussion about literary works (which is understood as one of the media products of culture) for students who come into the programme from various fields of study. After having been introduced to the core concepts of modern poetics and their potential uses, students will acquire the skills of observation, description, and analysis of the aspects and makeup of a literary work. Acquisition of the aforementioned skills creates the conditions for achieving the second aim of the course, which includes the ability to interpret an individual work as well as to typologize and compare groups of literary works in both synchronic and historic perspective, and to observe their transfer among various cultures. The third aim is for the students to achieve the potential for subsequent study and critical analysis of methodologies – the understanding of which will be developed in further courses – and especially the intermedia methodology. The poetics of a literary work is consistently developed as a poetics of an autonomous medium – at the same time, students will be able to utilize this experience to observe and describe the features of other media products (such as film, visual art, virtual reality etc.), as well as to conceptualize both mutual and specific features of the particular media, and perceive their interactions.
- Learning outcomes
- Students will be able to
- perceive and describe unique characteristics of a literary work,
- use this perception in both partial analysis and complex interpretation of literary works,
- conceptualize mutual features of literary works as categories of their poetics,
- use their knowledge of poetics in interpreting historic development of literature,
- recognize the relationships between literary works based on poetological observation,
- eventually acquire means of observation and terminologically grasp the products of other media. - Syllabus
