- Course objectives
- The course History of the Arab World in Antiquity and the Middle Ages provides comprehensive information on the development of the Arab world from the beginning of history to the Middle Ages. It will focus on the gradual development in the pre-Roman period, the ancient period, and the Caliphate period, with emphasis on the Arab relations with the Assyrians, Persians, and the Roman Empire. The course will also examine Arab religion, culture and thoughts in the ancient world, as well as the origins and history of the spread of early Islam or its relationship to ancient culture and the importance of Muslim scholarship to Europe.
- Learning outcomes
- After completion of the course, the student will be able to: explain the earliest development of the Arab world and its influence on the states of the ancient Middle East, Hellenization, Romanization and Christianization of the Arabs; describe the basic pre-Islamic deities of the Arabs, the gradual development of Arab and Muslim civilization and its influence on European culture; explain the basic ethical principles of Islam and compare it with other religions

- 1. Introduction, sources for the history of the Arabs, Arabs in the reports of ancient, Egyptian, Assyrian sources and the Bible 2. Arab tribes, type of society, original Arab deities 3. The earliest kingdoms in southern Arabia, their society, economy, government 4. The Nabataean state, its Hellenization and Romanization, Romanization and Christianization of the Arabs in the Eastern Roman provinces 5. The Arabs as Roman foederati, their place in the Roman state and army, the Ghassanids and Lakhmans as allies of the Roman and Persian empires 6. The origins of Islam, the life of Muhammad and his influence on the early spread of Islam 7. The Arab conquest of North Africa 8. The Umayyads in the East and West, the Muslim Conquest 9. The Abbasids 10. Muslim community, Islam and conquest, comparison of Islam with other religions, institutions, economy and culture of the Muslim empire 11. Cordoba Emirate, Caliphate 12.
