- Course objectives
- Continuation of the normative grammar of the Attic dialect of Ancient Greek. The main aim of the course is to deepen the knowledge of Ancient Greek grammar with other morphological (nominal, verbal) and syntactic categories in order to translate original texts. Students are encouraged to use tools to work with Greek texts (electronic dictionaries, databases, lists of irregular verbs, grammars).
- Learning outcomes
- At the end of the course, students will be able to:
- be fully familiar with the system of Greek nouns and adjectives;
- find any Greek noun in the dictionary;
- understand the system of Greek participles and be able to adequately translate them into Czech;
- understand the principle of vowel contraction;
- recognize and determine contracted verbs;
- understand the function of the Greek subjunctive;
- analyze longer Greek sentences and identify the types of sentences;
- explain the use of grammatical phenomena in specific sentences;
- use the dictionary to understand the original Greek text. - Syllabus
- 1. Passive aorist and future tense.
- 2. System of Greek participles.
- 3. Declension of participles.
- 4. Participle constructions, tranlation of participles.
- 5. Principles of vowel contraction in Greek.
- 6. Contracted verbs.
- 7. III declension: s-stems.
- 8. III declension: -i and –y vocalic stems.
- 9. Formation of subjunctive.
- 10. Conjunctive in main clauses.
- 11. Conjunctive in conditional, purpose and time subordinate clauses.

- Teaching methods
- Planned learning activities and teaching methods consist of lectures, practice (grammar exercises), reading of Greek texts, drill. During the semester it is obligatory to do homework.It is also compulsory to attend classes.
- Assessment methods
- Students' active attendance, including homework, is necessary. Credits are obtained by passing a written test. The test consists of a short Greek text translation, a translation of sentences from Greek into Czech. The text follows the grammar exercises: morphological determination of names and verbs, recognition of the narrative syntactic structures. Pass mark = 70%.
