Course objectives
Introductory course in literary scholarship and criticism covering elementary literary terms and definitions as well as interpretations of the main methodological streams. The course deals with traditional poetics, its innovations, including modern comparative and genre studies. A general introduction to Slavonic studies, based on the traditions of the Czech comparative approach and the study of literary genres. The seminar focuses on the analysis of poetry and verse techniques. The aims of the course are following: to introduce main literary theoretical approaches and strategies to the students; to provide the students with elementary terms from the fields of poetology, versology and narratology; to teach the students the basic strategies useful for interpreting scholarly and artistic texts.
Syllabus
  • 1. Literature as a kind of art, beginnings of literary art and its utilitarian and non-utilitarian character, literature as magic, literature and religion. Relation of literature and folklore.
  • 2. Basic stages of the history of aesthetic thought and its relation to literary art.
  • 3. Literary criticism in the system of sciences, related disciplines (history, philosophy, sociology, psychology, anthropology, aesthetics), applicatin of methods from other disciplines (statistics, information and communication theory), auxiliary disciplines (textology, paleography, bibliography, bibliology).
  • 4. The structure of literary criticism, its disciplines and subdisciplines, and its mutual realations. Evolution of literary methods.
  • 5. The relation of the history of literature and literary methods with special regard to the situation of interwar Czechoslovakia, the traditions of the Prague Linguistic Circle, Roman Jakobson, Vilém Mathesius, René Wellek. The problems of the confrontation of various methods. Contemporary situation of literary criticism.
  • 6. Literary axiology, its methods and genres. Literary history, periodization, its criteria, the periodization boundaries, conceptions of literary history, theory of literary history (René Wellek).
  • 7. Theory of literature and its disciplines. Theory of literature and poetics, theoretical poetics, historical poetics, general poetics, genre theory (genology) and the history of literary genres. Comparative literary studies, their development and methods.
  • 8. Poetry: verse theory.
  • 9. Prose: theory.
  • 10. Drama: theory.
  • 11. Mass literature: theory. Children's literature: theory. Theory of radio, film and TV texts. Literary currents. Slavonic literary studies, Literary criticism and Slavonic studies at the crossroads: the development of methodology and the impact of social sciences, special journals and scholarly organizations.
