- Course objectives
- The lecture is conceived as a cross-section of selected areas of human hematology and comparative hematology of individual vertebrate classes. They include both the descriptions of individual blood components, their function, their ontogenetic and phylogenetic development, and the overall role of blood in the physiological and pathophysiological functions of the organism. In general, the general principles of blood physiological functions are emphasized in the context of the particularities of particular vertebrate classes.
- Learning outcomes
- Student will be able to:
- identify and describe individual blood elements and their functions;
- describe ontogenetic and phylogenetic development of individual blood components;
- to compare and highlight the differences in vertebrate classes in hematopoiesis;
- analyze the role of blood in the physiological and pathophysiological functions of the organism; - Syllabus
- General blood properties and functions; Blood circulation (physical properties of blood circulation); Plasma (composition, function of main components); Hematopoiesis (erythropoiesis, lymfopoiesis, granulocytopoiesis, trombopoiesis), phylogenesis of hematopoiesis; Red blood cells (functions), hemoglobin; Blood groups; White blood cells (differentiation, functions); Lymphatic system; Blood platelets (development and function); Hemocoagulation (particular factors, intrinsic and extrinsic coagulation cascades, coagulation disorders, therapeutic treatments); Angiogenesis (basic principles, pathological stages)

- Lectures and presentations by specialists in the individual sectors of the field. Reading of scientific articles, class discussion.
- Assessment methods
- Written examination which consists of 12 questions. It is necessary to obtain at least 16 points (maximum 30 points) for succesful passing out.
