Course objectives
Students will get acquainted in detail with the most important topics discussed in Biochemistry II course: nucleic acids, metabolism and biosynthesis of sugars, lipids, amino acids, and proteins, respiratory chain and photosynthesis, thermodynamics of redox reactions, and hemoglobin.
Learning outcomes
At the end of this course, the students will understand the main topics of Biochemistry II course: replication, transcription, and translation of nucleic acids, principles and relationships between sugar, lipid, amino acid, and protein metabolism and biosynthesis, characteristics of respiratory chain and photosynthesis, thermodynamics of redox reactions, and structure and function of hemoglobin.
Syllabus
  • 1. Nucleic acids: Bases, nucleotides, primary structure of nucleic acids.
  • 2. Introduction to molecular biology. Replication, transcription, translation, and proteosynthesis.
  • 3. Polymerase chain reaction, genetic engineering. Exercices.
  • 4. Test 1.
  • 5. Redox reactions.
  • 6. Metabolism and biosynthesis of sugars and lipids: Repetition and exercises I.

Teaching methods
Seminar: Class discussion on the problematics, exercises, calculations.
Assessment methods
The participation in the lessons is compulsory, with one absence allowed. Additional absences must be excused through the study department. The credit will be obtained in the case of success in interim tests written during the semester (at least 70% of points in total). Retake tests will be based on the complete content of the course (requirement of at least 70% of points).
Language of instruction
English
Further comments (probably available only in Czech)
The course is taught annually.
The course is taught: every week.
Teacher's information
Electronic textbook Problems in biochemistry and the presentations containing the formulas and schemes are available in the Study materials. The students are advised to bring them to the course in a suitable form (either printed or in tablet), as they contain theory, schemes, exercises, and data required for the seminars.
