- Course objectives
- At the end of the course students should be able to describe regional geology of the Brno surroundongs.
- Syllabus
- 1. Position of Brno at the contact between the Bohemian Massif and West Carpathians. The problems of delimitation of the Brno unit. 2. The Brno Massif as a part of the Brunovistulicum. The Eastern and Western granitoid parts of the Brno Massif, the metabazite zone, occurrences of crystalline mantle rocks. 3. The Cambrian sediments as bedrock of the Carpathian Foredeep and the Ždánice Unit south of Brno. 4. The Devonian in the Moravian Karst development: basal clastic rocks, the Macocha Formation, the Líšeň Formation. The Lower Carboniferous in the Culm development. 5. Mesozoic sedimentary rocks: Jurassic limestones in the area of Brno and in the surroundings of Olomučany, the Lower Cretaceous Rudice Formation, the Upper Cretaceous in the Blansko graben. 6. Development of the Brno area in the Lower Tertiary. 7. Neogene sedimentary rocks as a filling of the Carpathian Foredeep: Eggenburgian - Ottnangian clastic rocks, sedimentary rocks of the Carpathian, clastic rocks of the Lower Badenian, Lithothamnion limestones. 8. The Quaternary cover, eolian, fluvial and deluvial sedimentary rocks. Generalized section through the Lower Pleistocene at Stránská skála and the last glacial age in the Kůlna cave. Human settlement in the Brno basin during prehistory. 9. Raw material basis used and prospective one. Rocks as raw materials for buildings in the Middle Ages and the present time.
