Course objectives
The lectures can be given in English. That course continues from the winter semester. The main attention will be paid to the evolution, morphology, ultrastructure, systematic position, biodiversity, biogeography, biotechnology. Many species from the living specimens, cultures or preserved material will be demonstrated in the laboratories. Field excursion at interesting algological localities following with the determination of natural samples and processing ecological data using multivariate statistical programmes. It includes both the processing of results and the participation of students on the publishing of data. Basic methods for studying different members of blue-green algae and algae. Preparation of culture media. Material and data sampling, storing and evaluating, dying methods, material documentation, computational phycology.
Syllabus
  • 1. Field research. 2. Taking of samples, the possibilities of preliminary identification of algae and cyanobacteria in the field. 3. Measuring of principle ecological parameters. 4. The evaluation of natural samples. 5. Species determination, processing of samples for biodiversity and ecology research. 6. Statistical processing and interpretation of data using multivariate methods. 7. The preparation of results for scientific publication. 8. Internet databases. 9. Image processing computer programmes, 3D visualisation of objects. 10. Taxonomy in phycology - phenetical and cladistic methods, basic computer programmes.
