Course objectives
The students attend the course Fyziologie II at the Faculty of Medicine, Masaryk University, as a follow up of the course Fyziologie I. The main objective of the course is to introduce to the students the basic physiology of man. At the end of this course the students should be able to: define basic concepts of general and systematic physiology; understand and explain basic physiological principles; describe respiratory functions; interpret pulmonary mechanics; understand gas transport; explain regulation of respiration; describe functional morphology of the kidney; understand and explain thermoregulation principles; describe physiology of childhood and adolescence, aging etc.
Syllabus
  • Respiratory functions. Pulmonary mechanics. Gas transport. Regulation of respiration. Respiration under various physiological conditions.
  • Functional morphology of the kidney. Clearance. Counter-current system. Regulation of kidney functions. Kidney in regulation of homeostasis.
  • Thermoregulation. GIT - mechanical functions. GIT - secretory functions. Regulation of gastrointestinal functions. Vitamins, minerals, water in nutrition.
  • Metabolism of saccharides and lipids. Metabolism of proteins. Energy metabolism. Nutrition, starvation, obesity. Physiology of exercise.
  • General principles of endocrine functions. Hypophysis. Adenohypophysis. Thyroid gland. Regulation of calcium metabolism and endocrine pancreas. Stress and adrenal gland.
  • Physiology of childhood and adolescence, aging. Male reproduction. Female reproduction. Pregnancy and lactation. Glandula pinealis, circadian rhythms. Skeletal, smooth and heart muscle. Physiology of adaptation.
