- Course objectives
- The goal of this course is to present to the students of anthropology with the modern trends in biological and biomedical research and to point out the social, cultural, ethical and legal consequences which arise with the application of the new biological knowledge in practical life.
- Learning outcomes
- At the end of this course the students should be able to understand the advances in assisted reproduction, genetic modifications, gene, cell and tissue therapy and related areas and should be able to reason and discuss general societal consequences of these technological advances.
- Syllabus
- 1) Introduction to bioethics (the emotion effect on the ethical reasoning of man, cooperation, altruism etc.)
- 2) Assisted reproduction
- 3) Genetic modification in plants in the context of environmental protection; in animal in the context of maltreatment prevention
- 4) Cloning in animals and humans
- 5) Gene therapy versus genetic enhancement in man
- 6) Cell therapy and tissue or organ engineering (chimerism, microchimerism)
- 7) Selection of a child by sex and other inherited traits and characteristics

- Theoretical lectures supplemented by discussion over individual topics.
- Assessment methods
- The course is concluded with written exam. To pass the exam successfully the student must prove good knowledge of the issues discussed during lectures and in the required reading.
