- Course objectives
- Aim of the course is understanding of gem properties and origin, and ability to use the knowledge of gems in everyday life.
- Learning outcomes
- At the end of the course, students will:
- • understand the main gemstones and their properties;
- • understand and explain basics of gemstone mining, processing, and economics;
- • know the types of gem deposits and broader social-economic-environmental implications related to their mining;
- • will be able to assess information available to customers on gemstone market.
- Syllabus
- History of gemstones, famous jewels, gemstone market.
- Introduction to mineralogy of gemstones, basic terms.
- Gemstone deposits and their exploration.
- The nature of color and light.
- Diamonds and colored gems (corundum, beryl, tourmaline, topaz, spodumene, jade, garnet, olivine, tektites, and others)
- Mining of gems and its implications.

- Teaching methods
- Lectures for 5 or more students.
Online lectures (is.muni.cz) possible for less than 5 enrolled students.
In case of sufficient enrollment to the course, teaching day and time will be adjusted based on needs of students enrolled to the course, after the first class

- Written final test; to pass the exam, at least 50% of points is required.
