- Course objectives
- Subject should offer integral overview of petrophysical properties of rocks, their meaning, methods of research and interpretation as the important branch of petrology. Lecture is assigned for students aimed at petrology, mineralogy and geochemistry. It is important also for practically oriented fields (technical petrography, geology of deposits, hydrogeology).
- Learning outcomes
- At the end of the course students will have an overview of the petrophysical properties of the rocks and their significance. Student will be able to choose an appropriate methodology for their research depending on the desired outcomes and will be able to interpret the acquired data.
- Syllabus
- 1-2) Topic of petrophysics, its position in Earth sciences (the density of the rocks and minerals, its measurement and use in geophysics and geology). 3-4) Magnetic properties of the rocks and minerals, paleomagnetic anisotropy, susceptibility, remnant magnetization, Curie temperature, methods of the measurement. 5-6) Elastic properties of rocks and their anisotropy, elastic properties, measurements in laboratory and in situ, velocities of the seismic waves and its types, geophysical and geological interpretations. 7-8) Electrical properties of rocks (the specific resistance, polarization, methods of measurement, the use in prospecting geology). 9-10) Natural radioactivity of the rocks (methods of measurement, natural sources, the use in petrology, geochemistry and environmental studies). 11-12) Methods of statistical data processing (scalar parameters, vectors and tensors).
