- Course objectives
- The aim of this course is to learn how to present on a given topic without too much stress, to see own mistakes and mistakes of others and learn from them.
- Learning outcomes
- Application of basic communication and presentation skills in scientific and non-scientific domain.
Recognition of elements and patterns in speech and nonverbal communication.
Development of ability to provide and accept constructive feedback and criticism.
Improvement and utilisation of improvisational skills for communication.
Preparation of PowerPoint (or analogical) presentation with all aspects typical for scientific forums, e.g. thesis defence. - Syllabus
- Main aim of this course is to build up presentation skills and ability to present on a chosen topic without feeling uncomfortable. The other aim is to learn how to pick up relevant informations from others' presentations and how to assess them in a peer-review process. This course is practical.
- Each lesson except the first will include student speeches (first half of the semester) and presentations (second half), always with peer feedback, and short improvisational exercises. Furthermore, following topics will be discussed:
- • time awareness while presenting
- • structure and format of a speech
- • voice intonation and stress
- • voice intensity and tempo
- • speech rhythm and pauses
- • posture and eye contact
- • facial expression and gesticulation
- • anxiety, stress, and embarrassment during public speeches
- • visual characteristics of a presentation
- • structure and content of a presentation
- • data visualisation
- • asking questions and providing feedback

- Final credit is assigned only for active parcitipation in the course and attendance. Speech and presentation on chosen topics are a prerequisition for credit assignement. Each absence must be excused by the teacher.
