Course objectives
History of molecular biology. Information macromolecules (proteins, nucleic acids). Molecular structure and organization of cellular and viral genome. Replication of prokaryotic, eukaryotic and viral genome. Transcription of genetic information. Structure of promotors and enhancers, transcription activators. Splicing, selfsplicing, editing hnRNA. Translation of genetic information (transfer RNA, activation of amino acids, ribosomes). Regulation of gene expression in prokaryotes and eukaryotes. Molecular basis of mutation and recombination. DNA repair. Restriction and modification of DNA. Prokaryotic and eukaryotic transposable elements. Basic methods of molecular genetics and gene engineering. Transgenic organisms. Gene therapy. Application of recombinant DNA to biotechnology.
