- Course objectives
- The main objective of the course is to provide a complete overview of morphology, structure and composition of human skeletal system. At the end of the course the student should be able to: summarize the factors influencing the morphogenesis during the pre- and post-natal development; describe the elements, structure and composition of human bone tissue; explain the principles of growth, development and maturation of human skeleton; describe the metabolism and biomechanics of human bones; decide on the sex of an individual based on the sexual dimorphism of human skeletal system; explain the variability of the skeletal system; recognize the varieties and pathologies of the skeletal system; interpret the evolutionary and culturally-induced skeletal modifications; describe the macro- and micro-evolutionary trends.
- Syllabus
- 1) Essentials of Skeletal Systems, Systematic Approach to Studies of Human Skeleton, Types of Bones 2) Structure and Components of Human Bone Tissue 3) Ontogenesis of Human Bones - Pre-natal stages 4) Ontogenesis of Human Bones - Post-natal stages 5) Metabolism of Human Bone Tissue 6) Biomechanics of Human Bones 7) Biological Essentials of Sexual Dimorphism in Human Skeleton 8) Plasticity and Variability of Human Skeleton (visual, metric, morphometric traits) 9) Pathology of Human Skeletal System 10) Culturally-induced Modification of Skeletal System 11) Taphonomy of Human Skeleton 12) Dental Anthropology 13) Evolutionary Strategies and Evolutionary Scars in Human Skeleton (bipedism, verticalization, parturition scars)
