- Course objectives
- The course provides general knowledge of basic subjects of school education. In the opening part of the course students are introduced to and gain insight into the basics of pedagogy. Subsequently the course attends to issues of the daily practice and the life of schools such as educational communication and relations between the school and the family. Attention is also focused on school management and on teachers and students as the main actors in education.
- Learning outcomes
- Students will get basic knowledge of pedagogy in the context of school and schooling. At the end of this course, students should be able to: understand and explain basic categories of education, discuss about teacher profession, students, schools (management of people, material sources, curriculum and outer relationships in particular), curriculum, means and aims of education, principals of educational process - and their mutual relations. Students should know the selected topics of the contemporary educational policy in the Czech Republic.

- 1. Education, its definition, subject matter, objectives and methods; division of educational disciplines; position in the system of sciences; school education, its content and function
- 2. Basic concepts and categories of pedagogy and general didactics (upbringing, education, schooling, educational processes)
- 3. Basic features of the thinking and work of Comenius
- 4. Outline of the history of modern pedagogy (Lock, Rousseau, Pestalozzi, Herbart, Tolstoy and others)
- 5. Trends in 20th century pedagogy (pragmatic education, positivist education, education of culture, Marxist education, Christian education); leading representatives and their work
- 6. Pupil as subject of education; developmental characteristics, types of intelligence, approach to learning; creativity
- 7. Teaching profession: specifics, content, competence, responsibility, in-service training; teacher professiogram; ethical issues
- 8. Role of teachers in the management of the educational process (operational and plan-based activities in class, decision-making, preparation for classes); class teacher
- 9. Educational communication and interaction; principles of communication in schools and its impact on the course of instruction
- 10. Classroom climate; work with the climate, effects of the climate and its impact on the educational process
- 11. Heredity, setting, education; family and education; relationship between the family and the school
- 12. School as institution; functions of the school; internal management and administration of schools; standards of schools operation; image of the school
- 13. Current system of education in the Czech Republic (types of schools, structure, content focus); transformation of Czech education
- 14. Alternative education in the Czech Republic (types of schools, their basic characteristics)
- 15. Curriculum and curricular documents (definition, purpose, work with curricular documents)
- 16. Legislation in education and its role (legislative process, Collection of Laws); other legal standards

- 1. A test to be passed that verifies the student’s knowledge of the fields of school education mentioned above
2. a) minimum 50 % active attendance in class or b) a thesis which is accepted under the following conditions: consultation of the subject with a tutor, on a subject related to school education, correct work with sources according to quotation standards, reasonable integration of theoretical and practical elements, 15 standard pages in length. A student’s own opinions, thoughts and ideas related to specialist literature are acknowledged. - Language of instruction
