- Course objectives
- This course is primarily intended for students of Biology, Biochemistry, Anthropology and students from the RECETOX centre. The objective of this course is to familiarize students with topics that are related to their field of study. Students will work with scientific topics to improve their grammar, enhance their vocabulary and writing skills to be able to communicate in academia. The course is focused on communication skills (discussion, paraphrasing, presentations), listening comprehension (popular science videos and podcasts), reading comprehension (popular science/specialised articles) and partially on writing skills.
- Learning outcomes
- At the end of this course, students will be able to: - use scientific vocabulary in context; - apply grammar in a scientific context; - identify key ideas in scientific text; - understand authentic scientific text; - summarise scientific text in speaking; - use language functions, e.g., defining, describing a process, comparing and contrasting, and explaining a cause-and-effect relationship - understand authentic speech on a scientific topic; - engage in a discussion on general and specialised topics. - write an academic email.
- Syllabus
- Explaining concepts. Speaking about a controversial problem. Describing and explaining a process. Describing an experiment. Comparing and contrasting. Classifying systems. Describing a cause and effect relationship. Speculating on an issue.
- Teaching methods
- The course is taught in English and employs the following approaches: communicative language teaching, task-based teaching and discovery learning. It is learner-focused and encourages students to practise autonomy, i.e., being responsible for their own learning. The tasks and activities may include: pair/group discussions and debates, mini projects (presentations, practical writing tasks, recordings), games and self-directed grammar and vocabulary work.
- Assessment methods
- Active work in the course, doing homework and 80% seminar attendance are compulsory. Students have to complete credit assignments throughout the semester.
- Language of instruction
