Course objectives
The aim of the course is to acquaint students with the spatial aspects of the economy at global, national and local level. Emphasis is placed on the economies of Central and Eastern European states, respectively on functional and spatial differentiation of agriculture, industry and services. The course reflects the past development, the current state and partly the prediction.
Learning outcomes
Students completing the course will be able to:
- to explain and apply the basic theories and concepts of economic geography;
- use adequate research methods of economic geography;
- characterize the process of transforming a centrally managed economy into a market economy (including accompanying features and phenomena);
- to describe the functional and spatial differentiation of agriculture, industry and services.
Syllabus
  • 1. Origin and development of economic geography (geography of agriculture, geography of industry and geography of services), basic theories and concepts;
  • 2. Quantitative and qualitative methods of economic geography;
  • 3. Transformation of the Central and Eastern European economies after 1989 with an emphasis on the Czech Republic;
  • 4. The impact of natural and socio-economic factors on agriculture;
  • 5. Plant and livestock production in agriculture;
  • 6. The problem of hunger in the world;
  • 7. Mining (impacts, potential);
  • 8. Foreign investment, investment incentives;
  • 9. Industrial zones, brownfields;
  • 10. Manufacturing, power generation and distribution in the Czech Republic and the world;
  • 11. Production services, telecommunications and financial services - definition, principle trends, spatial pattern;
  • 12. Logistics, consumption services and retail activities - definition, principle trends, spatial pattern;
  • 13. Global economic crisis at the beginning of the 21st century, further development of the economy.

Teaching methods
The basic teaching methods are lectures and class discussion. Practical exercises are also part of the course, in which the students learn to apply the theoretical knowledge gained from the lectures.
Assessment methods
The course is finished by an exam which consisting of written test and oral examination (the content is a curriculum of the lectures). The condition for participation at the exam is the granting of a credit for the corresponding attendance at the exercises and the elaboration of all assigned tasks during the semester.
