- Course objectives
- The course aims to explain the terms soil and pedosphere and define the position of soil geography in the system of natural science. Particular components of soil mass and their ecological qualities are presented. Especially accentuated is the explanation of soil-forming processes and characterization of their products - diagnostic horizons, soil profile, and soil types. The further aim of the course is to make students familiar with the main global and national soil taxonomies, territorial aspects of soil distribution, and the position of soil in the landscape ecosystem.
- Learning outcomes
- The student will be able to:
- explain the functions of soil in terrestrial ecosystems
- describe the process of soil formation, explain the conditions and factors acting in this process
- describe the action of soil-forming processes under different conditions and factors
- explain what a soil profile is, diagnostic horizons
- describe soil components and their properties
- describe the physical and chemical properties of soil and their importance in soil use
- adopt the world and Czech soil classification system
- deduce the geographical distribution of soil types
- Syllabus
- 1. Subject, tasks, and history of soil science: subject of pedology and soil geography, the position of soil science in the system of sciences, history of soil science, main soil science schools, the definition of soil.
- 2. Weathering: composition of the rock in Earth crust, chemical weathering, physical weathering.
- 3. Composition of soil: soil as a dispersal system, inorganic soil content, organic soil content, soil water, and air.
- 4. Soil properties: texture, structure, heat regimen, color, cation exchange capacity, pH, buffer properties.
- 5. Soil genesis: soil-forming factors and conditions, soil-forming processes, soil profile, diagnostic horizons.
- 6. Soil taxonomy: classification of world soils according to WRBSR, classification of soils in the national system Taxonomical classification system of Czech Republic soils.
- 7. Territorial differentiation of pedosphere: soil zonality, latitudinal and meridional zonality, altitudinal zonality, the structure of soil cover.
- 8. Soils in the environment: soil as an environment for plant growth, soil acidification, heavy metals and radionuclides in soils, climate change impact on soils, eutrophication, pesticides, droughts.
- 9. Soil degradation and conservation: causes of soil degradation, soil erosion, increasing and rehabilitation of soil fertility, biofarming.

- Teaching methods
- The exercises are carried out in the range of 2 hours per week. The core content is the students' activity in the field and the laboratory, during which they perform: a) a comprehensive description of the selected soil probe; b) selected laboratory analyzes of sampled soils. The first exercise includes instruction on processing soil profiles in probes and familiarizing with the environmental geography laboratory; two practices are devoted to the presentation and control of the results, their evaluation, and correcting any errors. In the meantime, there are teaching activities and two blocks of processing own samples in the laboratory. If necessary, enrolled students are divided into two groups and work in the laboratory once every two weeks. Credit is awarded for attending the exercise (1 absence is allowed, but it is necessary to complete the laboratory work in its entirety) and a protocol with a description of the soil probes. The content and formal aspects of the submitted seminar work are evaluated.
- Assessment methods
- The condition of assigning the credit is to submit the protocols with analyses of two soil profiles. The exam is in oral form.
