- Course objectives
- At the end of the course students will know the basic pharmacological principles and factors influencing drug actions. The student will be able to work with the valid drug information resources. The student will have the basic knowledge about drugs and medications to treat allergic reactions (antihistamine drugs, glucocorticoids and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) with the main focus on drugs used in ophthalmology.
- Syllabus
- 1st Lecture: Terminology in Pharmacology. Drug classification. General pharmacological principles. Basic mechanisms of drug action. Introduction to pharmacokinetics.
- Factors responsible for variation in drug response. Adverse drug reactions. Drug interactions. Development of new drugs and their life-cycle. Drug approval process.
- 2nd Lecture: Pharmaceutical drug dosage forms. Routes of drug administration (enteral and parenteral). Drug information sources and databases (Pharmacopoea, SUKL, Pharmindex, AISLP, etc.). Drug prescription rules and legislation. Prescription of narcotic and psychotropic agents.
- 3rd Lecture: Pharmacology of allergic reactions. Antihistamines. Glucocorticoids. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

- Teaching methods
- Students are provided with the pharmacology teacher presentation of the topic according to the curriculum. Oral presentation of the teacher contains pictures and schemes to demonstrate the pharmacological principles and help the understanging of the related topic.
- Assessment methods
- During the studying the student has to prove active knowledge of pharmacology acquired. The final multiple-choice test consists of 20 questions, 60% of correct answers is needed to pass. There is one correct answer in each question.
